19. Still Life Redonesque

Progress is slow but steady in the pastel still life course that I am attending at the Gage Academy in Seattle. This week, we began working with Wallis paper, a very fine-grained sandpaper which works very well with soft pastels. Our homework assignment was to copy a works by “Odilon” Redon, a French artist from the early 20th century. The piece I selected was “Minosas, Anemonies and Leaves in a Blue Vase” (1913)
This was the result, after working for several hours over the weekend.
Redon’s flowers have this marvelous quality of suggesting flowers, blossoms, and texture with virtually none of the detail. The suggestion of the flower suffices to carry the idea. His dark and brooding ground makes this piece slightly mysterious. I love how it accents the texture of the vase.
